Kathy Bates made her first visit to the Scranton branch in tonight’s episode of The Office. As the CEO of Sabre, the company that bought Dunder-Mifflin, Kathy Bates has interpreted a different kind of upper management foil for Michael and the staff. She’s pushy, aggressive, folksy and charming, all in one package, and I LOVE her in this role.
The new CEO, Jo Bennett, visits the branch to establish corporate policy and get the lay of the Dunder-Mifflin land. She immediately determines that the co-manager situation with Michael and Jim is untenable and orders a change. After discovering that the Sabre sales commissions are uncapped, Jim wants to step down to sales, but Michael also finds out and convinces Jo to have Jim remain as the manager. After a half day sitting on the floor, Michael misses his office and he and Jim are able to swap their jobs back.
In another storyline, Andy gives the whole office valentines when he really just wants to give one to Erin. The romantic valentine he intended to give to Erin ends up going to Kelly, and Erin gets the generic valentine that everyone else received. Predictable hilarity ensues.
Selected quotes from tonight’s episode:
Dwight: I wish I had a lair.
Dwight: Why don’t you just let me handle the Tolkien references, OK dumb jock?
Andy: It’s not because of the smell, I’m just expecting a nosebleed.
Kelly: I didn’t see you, and you were there all along.
