Wow. Big Love brought some unexpected complications this week. A recap of last week’s episode is here. HBO’s preview of this week’s episode is here. Summary of this week’s episode (spoilers after the jump):
Bill (Bill Paxton) continued to clash with lobbyist Marilyn Densham (Sissy Spacek), but was outmaneuvered when Barb (Jeanne Tripplehorn) used her seat on the Weber Gaming board to approve her lobbying contract. JJ Walker (Zeljko Ivanek) moves forward with his marriage to Nicki’s mother Adaleen Grant (Mary Kay Place), and with all the people coming in for the wedding from Kansas, will JJ be sticking around on the compound? I think he might have future plans there. While showing up at the compound to make a scene, Nicki (Chloe Sevigny) finds out that her father had arranged for her daughter Cara Lynn’s (Cassi Thomson) marriage prior to his death. She threatens to kill JJ and leaves with her daughter. Ben (Douglas Smith) goes to Mexico with his grandparents Frank and Lois (Bruce Dern and Grace Zabriskie) to help with their bird smuggling business, and after Frank angers their contact, they are captured by the Green Clan (the former rivals to Roman Grant who were cast out of the Juniper Creek compound and fled to Mexico). This development is certainly making things interesting. Ana (Branka Katic) dropped back into the Henrickson’s lives unexpectedly, and surprise! She’s pregnant with Bill’s child. And engaged. And she conceived before they were married and she told Barb. Finally, Alby (Matt Ross) continued to pursue UEB auditor Dale Tomasson (Ben Koldyke). Dale was deeply conflicted with his homosexual feelings for Alby, and when his secret came out (due to Alby’s wife informing both Bill and Dale’s wife), Dale hung himself in the apartment that Alby rented for their liaisons.
The episode title, Under One Roof, refers to Bill’s family meeting with the wives toward the end of the episode. Margene (Ginnifer Goodwin) had expressed reservations about the family coming out as polygamists after the state senate election. Barb was furious at Bill about his premarital sex with Ana, and it came out that he had done the same thing with Margene before they were married. Barb questioned whether everything they were doing was for the family and their faith, or if it was all just convenience for Bill. To address their issues, Bill took them to the 9,000 square foot house he was in talks with a realtor over, telling them that if he won the election they could all live under the same roof which is all he had ever wanted.
But enough of that, back to JJ. In a previous post I speculated about JJ’s intentions, and whether he would contend to be the new Prophet of Juniper Creek. I think it’s a safe bet given tonight’s goings on, that there will be a major power struggle in the future, now that Alby Grant’s extracurricular activities have become public. JJ is establishing a foothold in the compound, made stronger by his marriage to Adaleen. Alby will clearly be weakened and his leadership will likely be challenged. And to make things especially inconvenient for all involved, Hollis Green (Luke Askew) will likely bring his special brand of crazy into the mix as well, possibly leveraging Ben to influence Bill to get involved.
Next week should get really interesting.
